This edition of The Hook focused on celebrating the 100th anniversary of ECU’s newspaper: The East Carolinian. As production manager, my job was to come up with the creative direction, make layout assignments, and design spreads.

To complete this project I made illustrations, curated photography from archives, designed layouts, and took photos. This design took on an aesthetic I called “scrapbook deco”. I got inspiration from 1920s artwork as well as older methods of making newspaper layouts: by cutting & pasting by hand. This created an elegant & hand-made design theme for the publication.

I was also responsible for refining and editing the spreads created by two other designers. I created a moodboard and presentation in order to communicate my intentions for the magazine’s design direction to the other designers, as well as conducting bi-weekly check-ins with their design progress to give feedback.
